This book tells the story of the iconic band formed by Howard Devoto when he left the Buzzcocks. This revised and updated edition brings the story bang up-to-date. Already tired of the thrash and unrelenting nature of punk rock, Devoto wanted to combine the elements of avant-garde and pop. This he did with 'Shot by Both Sides', 'the best rock & roll record of 1978, punk or otherwise' (Rolling Stone) followed by their first album Real Life. Three more equally acclaimed albums followed before Magazine disbanded. With unique access to the band and interviews with the great and the good of the 1980s and iconic musicians of today, Helen Chase presents a riveting insight into the world of punk and beyond. Placing the band in the context of the Manchester music scene she explains why the band has such a solid fan-base and why Magazine had decided to re-form for live gigs some 30 years since they first took to the stage. Magazine was formed by Howard Devoto in 1977 bringing together some of the finest and most innovative musicians of the era. The core line-up with Devoto included John McGeoch, Barry Adamson, Dave Formula and John Doyle. The band had its roots in punk but had a greater emphasis on lyrical content whilst combining elements of avant-garde pop, funk and rock. The band has maintained a cult following which was rewarded in 2009 when the band decided to reform. Whilst working on solo material Dave Formula reopened communication lines between the key players and a series of re-union gigs was planned and received to wide acclaim. Buoyed by this, a studio album of new material (No Thyself) followed in 2011 along with another foray onto the live scene. Magazine are a greatly respected and hugely influential band and their music remains fresh and relevant today.

His latest travels include commentating on international golf, a sport he loves to play - although admits he's a better commentator than player! As a student, Dougie was Social Secretary at Strathclyde University when he booked Billy Connolly a gig! They remain good friends. As a young DJ Dougie first found his voice, that Glasgow one, before sending a demo tape to Radio Clyde. From 1979 to 1992 he presented Radio Clyde's Mid-Morning Show, before leaving to present on TV. Dougie soon established himself as a sports presenter and his skills as a chat show host were also recognised when he fronted a series Friday Night with Dougie Donnelly and a television special with Billy Connolly, Connolly with Donnelly both for the BBC.

Rusty Egan, co-founder of Visage and resident DJ at London's iconic Blitz Club, helped define the New Romantic music movement. His autobiography captures the birth of British electronic music, 1980s London nightlife, and collaborations with Midge Ure, Steve Strange, and other pioneers. Rusty Egan is one of the most iconic and influential figures in the electronic music industry. His career began in the music industry as a runner at DJM studios, followed by a stint at WEA Records. Rusty collaborated with former Sex Pistols member Glen Matlock, alongside Steve New and Midge Ure, to establish the new wave band Rich Kids. Their debut album, Ghosts of Princes in Towers, released in 1978, achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success. During the Rich Kids tours, Rusty met Steve Strange. This encounter led to Rusty's concept for a club night at Billy's, a Soho venue, catering to fashionable punks and showcasing the music they were passionate about. In 1979, they moved their club night to the Blitz in Covent Garden. As the resident DJ at the Blitz, Rusty played a pivotal role in introducing British, German, and Japanese electronica to the British club scene, essentially curating the soundtrack for the burgeoning New Romantic movement. Rusty Egan was instrumental in the formation of the band Visage with Midge Ure. Steve Strange joined them as the frontman (face and voice), and the lineup was completed by Billy Currie on keyboards, along with John McGeoch (guitar), Dave Formula (keyboards), and Barry Adamson (bass), all from the band MAGAZINE. Beyond his band work Rusty co-founded the incredibly popular Camden Palace nightclub in London with Steve Strange, where he continued to champion and shape the development of electronica in the UK. He also established Metropolis Music, a publishing and production company, allowing him to create music as well as perform it. In more recent news, Rusty released his album Welcome To The Dancefloor in 2017, which featured collaborations with Midge Ure, Tony Hadley, and Peter Hook. Rusty Egan is still regularly DJing and in October 2025 will be releasing his new album Romantic to coincide with this autobiography and the Design Museum's Blitz Club Exhibition centred of course, around Rusty and the Blitz Kids.

Zdenka protected this little tin ring with her life and with astonishing determination. Never falling into destructive self-pity, her compassion for other people, her sense of humour and the ability to take remarkable risks, are just part of Zdenka's indomitable spirit. Zdenka survived six concentration camps including Auschwitz, Gross Rosen, Mauthausen and Belsen – the worst of all. In the last chaotic days of the war in Belsen she crawled to a Red Cross post. There she was saved by an unknown British soldier to whom the book is dedicated.

The late Bill Griffiths (1948–2007)was an extraordinary writer and poet: radical, experimental and scholarly, but also had a great sense of humour. He was a wonderful champion of the North East, its people and heritage. Born in Middlesex, he read history before graduating in 1969. Bill ran his own independent press and published political pamphlets and essays on the arts and poetry. After gaining a PhD in Old English he fled London and settled in Seaham where he embraced the northern way of life. 'He was also a scholar of Old English and dialect who know how to make his work accessible. Private and uncompetitive, he was at least these things: poet, archivist, scholar, translator, prison-rights campaigner, pianist, historian, curator, performer, editor, short-story writer, essayist, teacher, book-maker and lyricist… The Saturday before he died, Bill discharged himself from hospital to host the Dialect Day at the Morden Tower in Newcastle upon Tyne. Until the 20th century, dialect was a marker of economic, social and cultural change. We know that the North East maritime connections with the Dutch led to the introduction of many 'new' words. The Scottish influence of the keelmen (fisherman) on the Tyne and their effect on local language was much more radical. Although the Tyneside dialect and identity and this way of speaking is fast waning, the popularity of discovering this language and dialect shows there is still a great interest in the languages and dialect of the past. The late Bill Griffiths (1948–2007)was an extraordinary writer and poet: radical, experimental and scholarly, but also had a great sense of humour. He was a wonderful champion of the North East, its people and heritage. Born in Middlesex, he read history before graduating in 1969. Bill ran his own independent press and published political pamphlets and essays on the arts and poetry. After gaining a PhD in Old English he fled London and settled in Seaham where he embraced the northern way of life. 'He was also a scholar of Old English and dialect who know how to make his work accessible. Private and uncompetitive, he was at least these things: poet, archivist, scholar, translator, prison-rights campaigner, pianist, historian, curator, performer, editor, short-story writer, essayist, teacher, book-maker and lyricist. The Saturday before he died, Bill discharged himself from hospital to host the Dialect Day at the Morden Tower in Newcastle upon Tyne.
